The Civil War
The village was literally caught in the middle of this tumultuous event due to its strategic location near the Fosse Way and between Newark and Nottingham. It was also involved in the war because of the political aspirations and leanings of two of its most important families of the time, namely, the Hacker family of the Hall House Estate in Colston Bassett and the Hutchinson family of nearby Owthorpe Hall.
The Plague
In 1604, Colston Bassett was struck by a devastating plague. Its effect was similar to that of Eyam in Derbyshire with all communication being cut off between the inhabitants and the surrounding villages or outside world. There is said to be a plague stone at the corner of the Owthorpe Road and Hall Lane, on which were placed food and necessities provided from outside.
