Newsletter: February 2009
NewsThe main focus for the group over the last couple of years has been the project “Colston Bassett Captures the Past”, funded with a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund. The grant required us to meet certain objectives and with the benefit of a high level of interest and participation from within the village we have successfully achieved these aims. These included:

• The development of a digital archive of photographs, now comprising over 1000 pictures dating back to the19th century.
• A collection of Oral History recordings, capturing the memories of residents of the village.
• Development of a website, which can be found on www.colstonbassetthistory.org.uk
• Collating some of the collected photographs into a booklet, “Colston Bassett – A Pictorial History” which was launched in September and has been distributed round the village.

Although the specific HLF project has now ended, the continuing aim of the group is to build on this, add to our archive of pictures and recordings and develop some new areas of interest.

At the AGM, in November 2008, a new Committee was elected and this now comprises Suzi McCullough (Chair), Neil Burgin, Jill Faulks, Mike Fish, Bunty Fletcher, Nick Goddard, David Lambert, Susan Lansdale, Charles Newton, Margaret Palmer, Elsie Richardson and Ernie Wagstaff. The Committee is supported by a number of active members and participation is open to anyone interested in joining the group.

Current ideas and projects include:

• Adding to the library of Oral History recordings
• Developing a pictorial history of the school
• Research into villagers who fought in the Great War 1914 - 1918

Please let us know if you would like to get involved in any of these projects or have any new ideas that you would like to develop. As an example, for the Oral History recordings you can be an interviewer, interviewee or help in transcribing/typing the recordings

Our book “Colston Bassett – A Pictorial History” has been distributed to all households in the village but extra copies are available for £10 from the Village Store, the Dairy or the Martins Arms.

The group now has a PA system which is available for village events (for a small charge to cover wear and tear). Please let us know if you would like to borrow it.
