As the Group evolves we are developing several areas of special interest following initiatives started by individual members. If you would like to become involved in any of these activities, as set out below, or would simply like to contribute material, then please feel free to contact us.
A Year in the Country:
As part of a project co-ordinated by Melton Carnegie Museum, we are contributing a monthly series of Oral History recordings, reflecting life in the village from the perspective of Lynne Bryan, at the Martins Arms. We are looking to complement this with photos of village life throughout the year (e.g. sport, events, farming). If you would like to contribute any photos please contact: Bunty Fletcher 01949 81594; Liz Alcock 81248; Mike Fish 81476 or Lynne Bryan at the Martins Arms.
Pictorial History of the School:
Charles Newton has started to assemble a record of the annual school photograph, or its nearest equivalent, for every year since its inception in 1872. If that isn’t challenge enough, he is also trying to put names to faces. If you have any of these photos lurking in a cupboard, which you would be willing to share, or can help with names please contact Charles, or let us know by email at colstonbassetthistory@live.co.uk or Mike Fish on 81476.
The War Memorial:
The names from the First World War on the War Memorial in the churchyard have prompted a group to look into the history of the villagers who fought in that War, including also, those who served and returned. Looking at their experiences in the War, the impact it had on the village and the people they left behind. If you have an interest in helping to develop this history, please contact: Jill Faulks. email: jillfaulks@aol.com
Oral History transcripts:
We would welcome assistance in proof reading and editing the Oral History transcripts that have been typed, by comparing them with the original recording. As we develop new Oral History recordings, we could also do with help transcribing them into a document.
Oral History recording:
There will be a training session in the Village Hall in September for anyone interested in learning how to make Oral History recordings i.e. using the equipment and the interview process. This will take place on Tuesday 15 September at 7.30 pm. Contact: Bunty Fletcher 01949 81594; Liz Alcock 81248 or Mike Fish 81476 if you would like to come along and see how it is done or if you would like to help with the transcripts.
