| Market Cross |
The Market Cross in the centre of the village opposite the store and the village hall is in the same position as shown on the earliest of maps.
Left: The Cross and Village Store as it is today.
On 3rd September 1257 the then king, Henry III made a grant to Ralph Basset and his heirs of a weekly market on Wednesdays at his manor of Colston Bassett. He also granted the holding of a yearly fair on the feast and morrow of St Faith. The Rev Young confirms that on 6th April 1284, King Edward I granted a weekly market on Fridays instead of Wednesdays. He notes that these rights have since vanished but he considers some parts of the original cross remain after it was rebuilt in 1831 to mark the coronation of King William IV.
